Christmas is coming!

After a prolonged period of “silent service” courtesy of an emergency eye operation – and isn’t our NHS a boon at times like these? – it’s good to return to my dear old Olivetti typewriter with some thoughts about Christmas Present.

Whilst Scottish New Year – or Hogmanay in the vernacular – are designed unashamedly for the adults – and are often accompanied by the battle-cry of, “Everyone  back to our place!” – Christmas is for families and friends, remembering what’s important and sharing bonhomie as almost anywhere else around the world. Castleview House is the ideal venue for just such an occasion with room to host parties of up to eleven humans and four well-behaved dogs. (Hope-Dunbar Park and Barrhill Wood to the rear of the property will sort out the latter whilst the Park’s amazing and recently extended play-park will keep the young-at-heart busy.)
And this year, to mark the 5th anniversary of our opening, we are happy to offer a spectacular hamper of Christmas Day wines with our compliments, all hand-picked by Ann from Ann et Vin our specialist wine emporium here in the heart of Newark.

These comprise a bottle each of:
~ Champagne, Red wine, White wine and a Dessert wine

  • Champagne Taittinger Brut Reserve NV: Rounded and rich with crisp, clean fruit and hints of brioche – a fabulous fizz to start your Christmas Day.
  • Montagny Premier Cru La Grande Roche 2017: A Red Burgundy to team with the Turkey  – elegant and full of rich fruit, with long mineral finish.
  • Louis Latour les Pierres Dorees 2017: Equally suitable to accompany the Turkey, this Gamay grape is powerful and deep with acidity and fruit combining to complement the varied flavours of a Christmas lunch.
  • Chateau Jany Dessert Wine: A beautiful Sauternes to complement the classic Christmas Pudding – full, rich and unctuous with balancing acidity on the finish.

After the consumption of them, a slow and gradual descent into the land of Nod beckons, reclined in front of our wood-burning stove and accompanied by a decent Single Malt or a generous measure of Vintage Port.
And for the rest of the week, you can choose between the art showcased at the recently opened Kirkcudbright Galleries or the family-orientated country pursuits on offer at Forrest Estate Experiences,  amongst much else beyond. And to give Mum a break, why not treat yourselves to a gourmet dinner prepared and served to you at Castleview House by Nick Morris of the award-winning Station House Cookery School located but a stone-throw away on St Mary’s Street.
Across the generations, Kirkcudbright has it all. Merry Christmas everyone!
